Coffin Selection

Coffin History

Historically, undertakers tended to work as joiners and carpenters, and used their skills to make coffins.  Following a death the undertaker would be called and asked to take measurements for a bespoke coffin. The coffin would then made from sanded and polished hardwood, and afterwards sealed inside with wax. T.W. Birks & Son were established as a joiners and undertakers in 1929 and used to make all our coffins on site. As times and funeral practices have moved on we no longer make our coffins on site, however we have used our years of knowledge and woodcraft to source the best coffin suppliers in the country who hand make our coffins to our high and exact requirements.

Coffin Brochure

During the funeral arrangement meeting, our broad range of coffins can be discussed through in detail. Because our funeral directors are extremely knowledgeable and have seen all the coffins first hand, they can consequently advise on the differences between coffins and which coffin may best fit your individual requirements.
